| description | This article studies the rebellion that took place in the Amakusa Islands as a paradigmatic example of how members of the Society of Jesus interfered in Japan’s internal political affairs at the end of the Momoyama period. The territorial decentralization prevailing in Japan at that time favored contact among the multiple feudal lords (daimyo), who assigned political and military power, and the missionaries, who sought the daimyos’ vital patronage and protection for their evangelical work. To assure these relations, the Jesuits sometimes intervened in internal issues of secular government, either materially by supplying weapons or resources to a daimyo or, more personally, by acting directly as counselors or intermediaries in armed conflicts such as the Amakusa rebellion. |

Este artículo analiza la rebelión acaecida en las islas Amakusa como ejemplo paradigmático de cómo los miembros de la Compañía de Jesús intervinieron en los asuntos internos de la política japonesa de finales del periodo Momoyama. La descentralización territorial imperante en el Japón de ese tiempo favoreció el contacto entre los múltiples señores feudales (daimyō), que se repartían el poder político y militar, y los misioneros, quienes buscaron en estos el patronazgo y la protección necesarios para desarrollar su labor evangélica. Con el fin de asegurar estas relaciones, los jesuitas en ocasiones intervinieron en cuestiones propias de los poderes seculares locales, bien de un modo material al suministrar armas o recursos a algún señor feudal, o de una forma más personal al actuar directamente como consejeros, mediadores o intermediarios en un conflicto armado, como en el caso de la rebelión de Amakusa.
