| description | This paper makes a historical reconstruction of important events in the territory now belonging to Bhutan. The reconstruction covers events taking place up until the beginning of the 20th century, when the hereditary monarchy was established. A table will summarize the events described. Thus, this article seeks to fill a gap by taking a systematic, historical approach in the academic analysis of happiness, Buddhism and development studies in Bhutan. Not a single Spanish-language source could be found on this topic. Special attention will be paid to shifting moments in Bhutan’s history, setting up a discussion about so-called identity construction processes, especially those referring to happiness as a central political goal. |

Se hace un repaso histórico de los acontecimientos más relevantes ocurridos en el territorio que ahora pertenece a Bután, en el periodo que llega a la instauración de una monarquía hereditaria a principios de siglo XX. En un cuadro se resumen esos acontecimientos. Así se pretende dar luz al periodo histórico más desconocido del país con objeto de complementar otros análisis académicos sobre la felicidad, el budismo y las particularidades del modelo de desarrollo en Bután. No se pudo encontrar una sola fuente en español sobre este tema. Se presta especial atención a los momentos de ruptura y continuidad que hayan condicionado la historia de Bután, y se cuestionan los procesos de construcción de identidad, en especial los que se refieren a la felicidad como horizonte vital u objetivo político.
