El Lago del Oeste de la ciudad de Hangzhou es uno de los más importantes lugares dentro de la historia cultural de China, y aun así hay muy pocos estudios en lenguas occidentales dedicados al mismo. En este artículo se pretende hacer un acercamiento al periodo de formación del paisaje del Lago del Oeste utilizando las nuevas metodologías interdisciplinares de los estudios de paisaje. Se examina el periodo de tiempo que hay entre los Reinos Combatientes y las Cinco Dinastías, y se muestran los procesos que intervienen para que un determinado lugar se convierta en paisaje famoso dentro de la cultura china.
