El texto ofrece una visión general del veredicto de Ayodhya, un fallo judicial de 2010 en India sobre una disputa de tierras entre comunidades hindúes y musulmanas. Si bien el modelo de secularismo en la India contemporánea busca la equidistancia del estado con todas las religiones, el veredicto emitido demuestra que el Estado indio no es neutral, sino que participa, controla y regula cuestiones de fe. Asimismo, el caso pone a discusión la relación entre religión, política y democracia en el país. A partir de estas consideraciones, se explora si el secularismo, tal como lo entendemos universalmente, puede adaptarse a contextos donde la religión es central en la vida pública y política, y cómo un Estado puede navegar entre proteger a las minorías y al mismo tiempo validar creencias religiosas en el ámbito jurídico.
