El presente artículo aborda la compleja realidad lingüística del árabe, definida por la diglosia o multiglosia, que implica la coexistencia de la lengua clásica o fuṣḥā, los dialectos cotidianos (‘āmiya, dāriŷa o lahŷa), y el "árabe medio" o ʿarabī al-wusṭà. El estudio se centra en cómo esta diversidad ha influido profundamente en la génesis, la evolución y la expansión del idioma. Asimismo, se explora cómo a pesar de sus variantes dialectales y la presencia del árabe medio, la lengua árabe actual exhibe una notable unidad en cuanto a la lengua escrita, originada en gran medida por las bases de los estudios lingüísticos de la fuṣḥā en El Corán.
