In this paper we use the main proposals of the theories of economic and human development to consider some of the achievements of The People’s Republic of China (China). The strength of China’s economic expansion is not open to dispute, but some of its results are disturbing, regarding the economic and social wellbeing of the population.
China’s experience is unique, corresponding to an ancient civilization and to a specific political system. The analysis made in this article compares approaches that could be described as analytical generalizations, but are nonetheless relevant in the context of academic discussions of government policy options and the socio-political wellbeing of the population in general.

En este trabajo utilizamos las principales propuestas del contenido de las teorías del desarrollo económico y del desarrollo humano para considerar algunos de los logros de la República Popular China (China). La expansión económica de China no es cuestionable, pero algunos resultados son perturbadores, si se considera el bienestar económico y social de la población. La experiencia de China es única en el sentido de que corresponde a una civilización de larga traza así como a un específico sistema político. El análisis que se realiza contrasta planteamientos que podrían ser calificados de generalizaciones analíticas, pero que resultan pertinentes en el contexto de las discusiones académicas, de opciones de política gubernamental y políticas sobre bienestar de la población.
