| Sumario: | This text offers an analysis of Shlomo Sand's The Invention of the Jewish People, which examines how notions of Jewish peoplehood and nationhood, of Jewish and Israeli identity, were historically constructed. Throughout the review, we explore how Sand challenges the idea of an unbroken ethnically homogenous Jewish lineage and points out that the foundational myths of Zionism and the State of Israel, such as mass expulsion and a unique biological origin, lack historical evidence. The aim is to open a critical discussion on the role of religious memory and national myths in shaping citizenship and identity in the State of Israel.
