En 1979, dado el extraordinario índice de crecimiento demográfico poblacional y la falta de recursos para alimentar a su población, China decidió establecer la política de un solo hijo por familia. Sin embargo, si bien esta política logró controlar el crecimiento de la población después de un tiempo, a su vez trajo consigo otra serie de problemas tales como la disparidad de género, las niñas perdidas, el envejecimiento de la población y los pequeños emperadores. Este artículo ofrece una breve historia de la planificación familiar en China para después explorar la política de un solo hijo por familia, su aplicación, su práctica y sus críticas, así como su futuro.
