| description | In the last 20 years China and Saudi Arabia have strengthened bilateral relations due to the necessity of increasing economic cooperation. The main purpose of this article is to examine the possibilities and limitations of the relation between these two countries. The analysis draws upon a neorealist vision in order to evaluate the manner in which changes in the system affected the relationship between both actors. It is argued that this relationship, far from representing a threat to the regional balance of power where the US is the main guarantor, has, in fact contributed to its maintenance. For this reason, we will likely see, in the future, more cooperation between China and Saudi Arabia, as well as more Chinese participation in the Middle East in general. |

En los últimos 20 años, las relaciones entre China y Arabia Saudita se han estrechado debido a la cooperación económica. Este artículo tiene como objetivo examinar cuáles son las posibilidades y las limitantes de la relación entre estos dos países. El análisis parte de una visión neorrealista para evaluar cómo los cambios en el sistema internacional han ido afectando las relaciones entre ambos actores. Se sostiene que dicha relación en la región del Golfo, lejos de representar una amenaza al balance de poder regional, donde Estados Unidos es el principal garante, ésta contribuye a su sostenimiento. Por ello es que en el futuro seguiremos presenciando más cooperación entre Arabia Saudita y China, así como más participación de China en la región del Medio Oriente en general.
