| description | This article explores the literary, theatrical and iconographic backgrounds associated with the story of Minamoto Yorimitsu and the earth spider. Proceeding from the standpoint of editorial censorship during the first half of the 19th century in Japan, it focuses on how the population of the city of Edo, as well as illustrators and publishers, used this tale with a critical aim. From a detailed study of an ukiyo-e woodblock prints on the subject, made by Utagawa Kuniyoshi in 1843, the article examines both the alternative versions based on this image—which appeared openly, in violation of government regulations—as well as some of the copies of Kuniyoshi’s prints, which are preserved of in major collections worldwide. |

Este texto explora los antecedentes literarios, teatrales e iconográficos vinculados con la historia de Minamoto Yorimitsu y la araña de tierra, para concentrarse en analizar, desde el eje de la censura editorial durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX en Japón, las maneras en que este relato se utilizó con fines críticos por parte de la población de la ciudad de Edo en esos años, así como por ilustradores y editores. A partir del estudio detallado del grabado ukiyo-e que sobre el tema realizó Utagawa Kuniyoshi en 1843, el artículo examina tanto las versiones alternativas basadas en esa estampa, que se publicaron violando abiertamente las reglamentaciones del gobierno, así como algunas de las copias del grabado de Kuniyoshi, que se conservan hoy día en importantes colecciones del mundo.
