| description | The present investigation applies a conversation-analytic approach to the study of the linguistic particles ah and ay in naturally occurring interaction. The particles are analysed from a corpus of Mexican Spanish interactions. Ah and ay are defined as change-of-state tokens, ah and ay show acceptance or resistance to the previous stretch of conversation. Ah is examined in post informing sequences and it is argued that it initiates a preamble for a following action. It is also illustrated how speakers treat informing turns differently depending on the knowledge they have shown in the previous interaction. Ay is also analysed in informing contexts where it displays surprise. It is argued that the degree of surprise displayed with ay is greater than the one displayed with ah. Ay is also used to initiate the repair of a previous turn. Ay can mark inapposite talk, indicating that the information conveyed by the previous conversation stretch should have been taken for granted. Original received: 2015/05/06Review sent to author: 2015/07/28Accepted: 2016/05/06 La presente investigación utiliza la metodología del Análisis Conversacional para estudiar las partículas lingüísticas ah y ay en conversaciones de la vida cotidiana.Las partículas fueron tomadas de un corpus de interacciones en español mexicano de la ciudad de Toluca. Ah y ay son caracterizados como indicadores de cambio de estado, en general ah y ay muestran aceptación o resistencia al pasaje de habla precedente. Se examina a ah en secuencias posteriores a informes, y en este contexto se sugiere que ah inicia el preámbulo de la acción siguiente en la conversación. También se ilustra cómo los hablantes tratan de manera diferente los turnos informativos dependiendo del conocimiento que han mostrado anteriormente en la interacción. Ay también se analiza en contextos informativos donde se registra sorpresa. Se argumenta que el grado de sorpresa indicado por ay es mayor al indicado por ah. Ay es también utilizado para iniciar reparación a un turno anterior. Ay puede marcar habla obvia, es decir, indica que la idea presentada en el turno anterior debió haberse dado por sentada.
