En este trabajo nos enfocamos en el análisis de la epéntesis vocálica en mazahua tanto respecto de su motivación como del timbre de las vocales epentéticas. En el primer aspecto, mostramos que las vocales epentéticas permiten conformar pies trocaicos silábicos a partir de raíces tanto nominales como verbales, las cuales son subyacentemente monosilábicas. Cuando las raíces están seguidas de un sufijo, las vocales epentéticas no son necesarias. En cambio, los enclíticos no pueden incorporarse al pie principal de la palabra fonológica. En el segundo aspecto mostramos que el mazahua tiene tres tipos de vocales epentéticas: mínimamente marcadas, coloreadas por el contexto y mixtas (parcialmente no marcadas y parcialmente coloreadas por el contexto). Tal tipo de sistema no ha sido reportado previamente para ninguna lengua humana. Analizamos este fenómeno en el marco de la Teoría de la Optimidad y a partir de eso proponemos una reformulación de la tipología factorial de Kager (1999) sobre los timbres de los segmentos epentéticos.
