Description
Résumé:One of the most significant developments for the Asia-Pacific region in 2022 was the Fourth Taiwan Strait Crisis. The events surrounding Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan thrust the island onto the headlines of international news media once again. The  armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine also raised the question about how far Beijing’s leadership was willing to go in regard to Taiwan, its sovereignty, and the historic goal of national unification. Nonetheless, although Taiwan was perceived internationally as one of the most dangerous places on earth (see The Economist cover of May 2021), the islanders themselves viewed the situation differently. In this report, I summarize the different areas that are relevant for an understanding of Taiwan's development throughout 2022, including economic, political, and social issues, as well as theisland’s relations with mainland China and the rest of the world.
