Frente a los excesos etnográficosy las carencias formales de la dialectología tradicional, el intento es reducir a unas pocas afirmaciones la diversidad del material. Bajo una perspectiva propia de la fonología variable, los datos se depuran cuantitativa y formalmente para proponer un modelo simple de zonas dialectales a partir de unas pocas restricciones lingüísticas.
