| description | This article deals with the history of the different ethnolinguistic groups of Santa Isabel (present-day Malabo, Bioko, Equatorial Guinea) during the second half of the 19th century, in order to contextualize the background against which the Spanish language was implanted. I use historical sources to establish the multilingual repertoires of Spaniards, (Afro-) Cubans, “Fernandians”, Krumen, “Portuguese” and Bubis. Finally, I reconstruct the dynamics of linguistic interactions among these groups. In additionto the omnipresence of the English language, a restructured Spanish-based vehicular language was used, which constituted the first historical context in which Spanish played a role in Equatorial Guinea. |

Este artículo repasa la historia de los distintos grupos etnolingüísticos de Santa Isabel (actual Malabo, Bioko, Guinea Ecuatorial) durante la segunda mitad del s. xix, para contextualizar el fondo sobre el que tuvo lugar la implantación del español. Especifico, a partir de testimonios de la época, los repertorios multilingües de españoles, (afro)cubanos, “fernandinos”, krumanes, “portugueses” y bubis, y reconstruyo las dinámicas de interacción lingüística entre estos grupos, en las que, además del omnipresente inglés, se utilizó una lengua vehicular reestructurada de base hispánica, mque representó el primer contexto histórico en que el español tuvo alguna presencia real en Guinea Ecuatorial.
