| description | This article analyses the important role that the early reading of the book The birth of tragedy by Friedrich Nietzsche played in two different periods in the works of Alfonso Reyes. In the first period, during the youth of the Mexican author, from 1906 to 1909, his work expresses a definite Dionysian impulse in tune with his reading of Nietzsche. In the second stage, in the mature and serene period after Reyes’ return to Mexico in 1939, the poet maintains a combative and agonistic resistance to excess. His work evolves from a Dionysian pathos to an agonistic ethos. The two antagonistic forces –the Apollonian and Dionysian spirits– which produced the Greek tragedy and were analysed by Nietzsche always accompanied Reyes’ reflections on classical culture. |

Este artículo analiza la importancia que la temprana lectura del libro de Friedrich Nietzsche, El nacimiento de la tragedia, desempeñó en dos momentos distintos de la obra de Alfonso Reyes. En el primer período, en la etapa juvenil del escritor mexicano, que se desarrolla entre 1906 y 1909, se manifiesta, en sintonía con su lectura nietzscheana, un determinante impulso dionisíaco. En el segundo momento, en el período maduro y sosegado, posterior al regreso de Reyes a México en 1939, el poeta mantiene una actitud de combate, agónica, contra la desmesura. El trayecto de Reyes va de un pathos dionisíaco a un ethos agonista. Las dos fuerzas antagónicas ‒los espíritus apolíneo y dionisíaco‒ que generaban la tragedia griega y fueron analizadas por el filólogo alemán siempre acompañaron las reflexiones de Reyes sobre la cultura clásica.
