In a second part it traces the evolution of Madrid as aroyal court during the reign of Felipe II, Felipe III and Felipe IV and its functionas a literary space. Finally a critical revision of the most significant studiespublished during the last four decades on the genre of the picaresque novel,as well as an analysis on the evolution of the genre from the publication ofthe Lazarillo de Tormes (1554) to the first edition of Estebanillo González (1646). |

Fecha de recepción: 23 de enero de 2014Fecha de aceptación: 30 de octubre de 2014 El presente estudio tiene como principal objeto fijar el corpus de textos pertenecientes al género de la novela picaresca que se escribieron durante el reinadode Felipe IV (1621-1665) y analizar en ellos el funcionamiento de la Corte como espacio. Previamente, se efectúa un sucinto repaso histórico de la relación entre literatura y ciudad al arrimo de cuatro autores, obras o movimientos, desde la Antigüedad clásica hasta arribar al establecimiento de Madrid como capital de la Monarquía Hispánica por Felipe II en 1561. Seguidamente,se examina, primero, la evolución de Madrid como Corte en los reinados de Felipe II, Felipe III y Felipe IV y, luego, como espacio literario. Por último, serealiza una revisión crítica de los estudios más significativos publicados en los últimos cuatro decenios a propósito del género “novela picaresca”, así como un estudio de la evolución de la serie genérica desde la publicación del Lazarillo de Tormes (1554) hasta la del Estebanillo González (1646).
