El propósito de este trabajo es presentar nuevas series del comercio exterior que, si bien no son exactas, son lo suficientemente aproximadas como para servir de base a cualquier estudio sobre el tema. Por cuanto las fuentes mexicanas son muy incompletas y poseen múltiples limitaciones, hemos recurrido para ello a prácticamente todas las fuentes extranjeras disponibles. Adicionalmente, ofrecemos los principales indicadores empleados por la literatura internacional para evaluar el desempeño del comercio exterior: términos de intercambio, capacidad para importar, valores constantes y valores per cápita. Nuestra percepción es que aquel fue pequeño y creció poco, reflejando una economía similar.
