| Sumario: | Through sources that have gone unexplored until now, this article reconstructs the scandal unleashed during the trial of residence for Viceroy Revillagigedo in 1795, when José Antonio de Alzate, editor of the Gaceta de Literatura de México, made an extremely serious accusation: by ordering the removal of the statue of King Fernando VI from the Plaza Mayor, the former viceroy was guilty of no lesser crime than regicide. By analyzing the debates held as this situation escalated, it offers a political reading of the New Spanish Enlightenment that connects intellectual questions to social conflicts. |
