Resumo:This article aims to examine the autonomy of seventeenth century Jesuits in New Spain with respect to their Roman authorities and thus debate the degree of validity of the classical analyses that insist on theverticality of power in the Society of Jesus. It is therefore based on internal primary sources from the Society of Jesus. Lastly, it provides an approach to the internal articulation of a supranational institution in the context of the Spanish Empire.
