Addressing the context of conflict due to the consolidation of newly-independent nations that frames these books and the journeys they were based on, this article explores the political models of the nation that both intellectuals put forward in their works. It will observe the configuration of their ambivalent, contradictory political utopias, which these works identified with the U.S. nation. |

Este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar las representaciones de los Estados Unidos realizadas en dos libros de viajes latinoamericanos de mediados del siglo XIX, Viajes por Europa, África y América, 1845-1847 del argentino Domingo Faustino Sarmiento (1811-1888), e Impresiones de un viaje a los Estados Unidos de América y al Canadá del mexicano Justo Sierra O’Reilly (1814-1861). Atendiendo el conflictivo contexto de la consolidación de las nuevas naciones independientes que enmarca a estas obras y sus viajes, en este trabajo se profundiza en los modelos políticos de nación que ambos intelectuales proyectaron en sus libros. Para ello observaré la configuración de sus utopías políticas, ambivalentes y contradictoras, que en estas obras se identifican con la nación estadounidense.
