The widespread and wrongheaded belief that the Holy Office persecuted sodomy nevertheless persists in academia, even though the sources show the contrary, as we shall see. Through the case of a mulatto minor who denounced a black puppetmaster to a priest in Yanhuitlán, it is possible to catch a glimpse of the lives of marginalized individuals who, in poverty, isolation and anonymity, traversed long distances, escaping the control and surveillance of the authorities in order to make a living from the circus arts. Here, we can also question the alleged ethnic and racial solidarity of people of African descent, an analytic category imported from the Anglo-Saxon world that does little to explain the complex relationships between New Spaniards. |

La sodomía fue considerada por la teología cristiana como uno de los más graves pecados de lujuria, pero como sucedía con frecuencia en la Nueva España, los acusados de cometer tan terrible falta, salían bien librados. En la investigación académica persiste la extendida y equivocada creencia de que el Santo Oficio perseguía el delito de sodomía, aunque las fuentes muestran lo contrario tal y como se verá. Mediante la denuncia de un mulatillo ante un religioso en Yanhuitlán contra un negro titiritero es posible atisbar a la vida de esos seres marginales que, en la pobreza, el aislamiento y el anonimato recorrían el inmenso territorio eludiendo el control y la vigilancia de las autoridades, para intentar subsistir del oficio de maromeros. Asimismo cuestionamos la supuesta solidaridad étnica y racial entre los afrodescendientes, categoría analítica importada del mundo anglosajón que poco explica y mucho estorba la comprensión de los complejos vínculos entre los novohispanos.
