La interpretación de la historia de América basada en las ideas del difusionismo cultural ganó terreno desde finales del siglo XVIII e influyó de manera contundente en la producción intelectual a lo largo del siglo XIX. El artista viajero Jean-Frédéric Waldeck se cuenta entre los cultores de esta vertiente de pensamiento, la cual lo orientó en la creación de una vasta obra dedicada al registro de los monumentos del México prehispánico. A partir de una somera revisión de la controvertida y más que centenaria biografía de este personaje, el artículo explora sus registros visuales y escritos personales, con especial atención al trabajo que realizó durante los catorce meses que pasó en Palenque.
