Historians have never used these documents to study the Carrera de Indias [the colonial convoy system], even thoughBurgos was at the time the insurance center for the Spanish and Portuguese trade inAmerica. By analyzing the maritime insurance policies we can learn not only about the number of ships departing from Europe and Africa towardsNew Spain, but also about their merchandises and the incidents during the journeys. Moreover, since the documents have the names of the consignees living inMexico, as well as of the merchants who insured their merchandises inSpain andPortugal, we can reconstruct some of the features of the trading and social networks established between both parts of the Spanish Empire during those years. |

El artículo aborda el estudio de las redes comerciales que se establecieron entre Nueva España y Castilla en el periodo de Felipe II. Para ello partimos de la base documental de más de 200 pólizas de seguros marítimos, conservadas en el Archivo del Consulado de Burgos y que se refieren a dicho trafico, las cuales abarcan el periodo que va desde 1565 a 1586. Esta documentación nunca se ha utilizado por los historiadores para estudiar la Carrera de Indias, a pesar de que Burgos fue en aquellos años el centro asegurador del comercio americano de España y Portugal. A través del análisis de dicha pólizas de seguros marítimos, podemos saber no sólo el número de barcos que partieron de Europa y África con dirección a Nueva España, sino también sus mercancías y las incidencias que hubo en los viajes. Pero, al figurar en la documentación los nombres de los consignatarios, asentados en México, y de los mercaderes que aseguran en España y Portugal, se puede reconstruir algunos de los rasgos de las redes comerciales y sociales que se establecieron entre ambas partes del imperio español en aquellos años.
