Este artículo es un acercamiento histórico a la mortal epidemia de viruela de 1779 y las diversas manifestaciones que produjo tanto en el campo de la salud como en el de la demografía dela ciudad. Presentainformación estadística nueva y que más allá de los testimonios revela el impacto y consecuencias de la epidemia tanto en párvulos como en adultos a lo largo de las diferentes parroquias de la ciudad en el lapso temporal que va de septiembre a noviembre de aquel año. El artículo muestra también que los efectos del comportamiento climático y aquellos derivados de las malas cosechas de 1778 y junio de 1779 permiten hacer una asociación entre crisis alimentaria y epidemia.
