As the Revolution's “Jefe Máximo” [commander in chief] he supported the Spanish Republic openly and enthusiastically; the purchase of vessels from Spanish shipbuilders affected by the Great Depression proves this point. However, in stark contradiction to his earlier position, once in exile General Calles participated in a conspiracy seeking financial aid from the Government that overthrew the Spanish Republic. In 1940 he tried to organize a movement against President Lázaro Cárdenas' regime in order to put an end to his reform programme. |

Entre las características de la revolución mexicana destaca su flexibilidad, por no decir sus contradicciones, ideológicas. Con perspectiva, puede concluirse que esta ausencia de ortodoxias no necesariamente resultó negativa al régimen surgido de esa revolución. Un indicador de esta característica lo personifica el general Plutarco Elías Calles. En su calidad de “Jefe México” de la revolución dio un apoyo abierto y entusiasta a la República española y la compra de buques a los astilleros españoles afectados por la gran depresión es prueba de ello. Por otro lado, y en abierta contradicción con su posición anterior, el Calles en el exilio se prestó a conspirar para obtener ayuda económica del gobierno del verdugo de la República española, Francisco Franco, para organizar un levantamiento en 1940 contra el gobierno del presidente Lázaro Cárdenas y poner fin a su programa reformista.
