| description | During the last decades, historians have become increasingly interested in the Catholic Church, so that now we can find a great amount of researchers devoted to the history of the Latin American church. However, this would have been unimaginable decades ago, because the Church was a topic dealt with exclusively by “confessional” historians belonging to the ecclesiastical institution. The development of ecclesiastical history as a relevant research field for professional historians has many common traits in Mexico and Argentina, the two cases described in this paper, which offers a critical review of the most recent historiography on the Church produced in these two countries. This analysis allows us to compare two historiographic trajectories with many common concerns, viewpoints, and problems. |

En las últimas décadas, la Iglesia católica comenzó a despertar gran interés entre los historiadores, de tal modo que hoy puede encontrarse importante cantidad de investigadores que se dedica a estudiar la historia de la Iglesia latinoamericana. No obstante, décadas antes, esto hubiera sido difícil de imaginar porque la Iglesia era tradicionalmente una materia que permanecía depositada exclusivamente en las manos de los historiadores “confesionales”, inscriptos dentro de la propia institución eclesiástica. El desarrollo de la historia de la Iglesia como un área de investigación de interés para los historiadores profesionales presenta en México y en Argentina —los dos casos que aquí abordaremos— algunos rasgos en común; a continuación, le ofreceremos al lector una revisión crítica de la historiografía más reciente sobre la Iglesia que se desarrolló en estos dos países. Este análisis nos permitirá comparar trayectorias historiográficas que muestran preocupaciones, perspectivas y problemas en común.
