description This essay discusses the phenomenon of orphanhood which affected a large number of children after the cholera epidemic that struck Yucatan in July 1833. Moreover, it inquires into the fate of children whose parents died of cholera, the role played by kinship networks to provide them with shelter, and the influence of the Church and the State on the situation. Based on first hand sources, the author suggests that the orphanhood produced by cholera served as a pretext for economically and socially privileged groups to get hold of free labor force both for domestic service and hacienda work.
