| 總結: | During the early eighteenth century, through a rigorous extirpation campaign and substantial parish reform, Bishop Fr. Angel Maldonado attempted a reconquest of the native communities of the district of Villa Alta, Oaxaca. This article examines native resistance to parish reform through a focus on the oral performance of legal testimony by Zapotec witnesses in a 1734 investigation concerning parish organization. The use of oral performance as an analytical tool reveals how the witnesses deployed rhetorical skill and cross-cultural competence in order to preserve native autonomy from church and civil intervention, and simultaneously negotiate their identity as colonial subjects. |
