Este trabajo revisa algunos argumentos de la historiografía mexicana sobre el norte de México por medio del análisis de la obra de José Fuentes Mares. Esos argumentos son: el desierto, la historia criolla y las élites. En la obra de este historiador es fundamental considerar la de quienes escribían desde otros puntos de vista y con otros propósitos, como Francisco R. Almada, quien en la decada de 1950 sostuvo una fuerte polémica con Fuentes Mares en torno a las figuras de Luis Terrazas y Benito Juárez.
