Racial inequality and privilege are blurred through a constant effort to validate and reclaim the hegemonic discourse which, under mestizaje, states that racial conflict has been resolved. Here I present three strategies that attest to how mestiza society responds at times when racial conflict –anti-indigenous racism in this case- becomes visible. I explore how they translate into mechanisms to achieve the “moral regulation” of social relations (Corrigan, & Sayer, 1985). The first mechanism I define as “mestizo innocence,” the second is a response from the perspective of “mestizo fragility” and I identify the third as neo-populist mestizaje, an updated version of the mestizo project of the twentieth century. |

Una característica de la ideología del mestizaje es negar el racismo. La desigualdad y el privilegio racial se hacen difusos por medio de un esfuerzo constante por validar y rescatar el discurso hegemónico que, bajo el mestizaje, sostiene que el conflicto racial está resuelto. Aquí presento tres estrategias que atestiguan cómo la sociedad mestiza responde en momentos en que el conflicto racial –el racismo anti-indígena en este caso, se hace visible–. Exploro cómo se traducen en mecanismos de “regulación moral” de las relaciones sociales (Corrigan, & Sayer, 1985). El primer mecanismo lo defino como “inocencia mestiza”, el segundo es una respuesta desde la “fragilidad mestiza” y, por último, el tercero, lo identifico como mestizaje neo-populista, como una versión renovada del proyecto mestizo del siglo xx.
