| description | This paper uses instrumental variables to estimate market power in the manufacturing sector at the two digit level for the 1970-1990 period. Similarly to Hall (1988), the identification assumption states that the rate of growth of total factor productivity is not intrinsically procyclical. The fact that observed productivity is procyclical is due to the presence of market power. The assumptions of optimization and constant returns to scale are maintained in order to be able to estimate the degree of market power. The results show ample evidence of market power in the Mexican manufacturing sector. |

Este trabajo utiliza variables instrumentales para estimar el poder de mercado a nivel de sectores manufactureros (dos dígitos) para el periodo 1970-1990. Al igual que en Hall (1988), el supuesto de identificación es que, el crecimiento de la productividad total de los factores no es intrínsecamente procíclico. La observación de una productividad procíclica se debe a la presencia de poder de mercado. Para hacer la estimación se mantiene el supuesto de optimización por parte de las empresas y de rendimientos constantes a escala. Los resultados arrojan amplia evidencia de poder de mercado en el sector manufacturero mexicano.
