| description | The author wants to establish the relationship between the agents and circumstances involved in the implementation of the first graduate studies on urbanism in Venezuela. The making of Caracas as the capital of the new country, during the last quarter of the Nineteenth Century, not only morphologically marked the urban center but it also established the engineering -and its guild-, along with public health, as the first sources used to outline the professional competence and needs. The accelerated urbanization process that began with the oil impact on the country's economy, clearly revealed the lack of human resources to face the increasing urban problems; therefore, possible solutions to them were sought first in Europe and later in the United States. The public sector substituted -through its own urban planning organizations- the lack of academic formation with the professional practice in public administration, first at a municipal level and then at the national one. At the same time, a group of immigrants joined the private construction sector. Despite the uneven quality of the group, it contributed to adapt the imported models to the country's requeriments and therefore, to evidencíate the need for the implementation of graduate studies on urbanization in Venezuela. |

Se pretende aquí hacer converger las circunstancias y los protagonistas que alrededor de la historia urbana de Caracas se pueden definir como la base para la formalización de los primeros estudios universitarios de urbanismo en Venezuela. La construcción de Caracas como capital del nuevo país, durante el último cuarto del siglo XIX, marcó no sólo morfológicamente el centro urbano, sino que consolidó a la ingeniería y a su gremio como las primeras fuentes, junto con la salud pública, para el delineamiento de competencias y necesidades profesionales, aunque todavía precariamente establecidas. El acelerado proceso de urbanización, a partir del impacto del petróleo en la vida económica del país, evidenció con mayor claridad la carencia de recursos humanos para encarar los crecientes problemas urbanos, por ello se buscó en Europa, primero, y luego en Estados Unidos, las posibles soluciones a las dificultades surgidas por este proceso. La iniciativa pública, primero en el ámbito municipal y luego en el nacional, fue quien dentro de los propios organismos de planificación urbana suplió la ausencia de cursos de formación con la práctica empírica del ejercicio profesional en la administración pública. Mientras, el sector privado de la construcción recibió un contingente inmigratorio cualitativamente desigual (pero no desdeñable en lo que a importación de modelos y su traducción vernácula se refiere) que contribuyó a decantar la necesidad de formalizar la primera iniciativa universitaria de estudios de urbanismo en Venezuela.
