| description | The Mexican northern border region has undergone one of the most significant and interesting populations growths of this century in the country. In strictly demographic terms, this growth is explained almost completely by the intense migration to the region from the rest of the country. Tijuana has been the most extraordinary example of the modern demographic history of the northern border. This article is an essay on the economic, social, and demographic development of this important urban center during this century. It's purpose is two fold. On the one hand, to understand Tijuana's general population change in light of a unique socioeconomic development in the country, which has been characterized by a close dependence on the United States as will as by the creation of several federal programs aimed to integrate the border and the natural economies. On the other hand, to introduce the discussion of the Mexico-United States border region to the non-specialist in this field. |

La franja fronteriza norte de México ha experimentado uno de los crecimientos poblacionales más significativos e interesantes del país durante el presente siglo. En términos estrictamente demográficos las magnitudes y los cambios de este crecimiento se explican casi en su totalidad por los impactos que ha tenido la intensa migración hacia la zona desde el interior del país. Tijuana ha sido el ejemplo más extraordinario de la historia demográfica contemporánea de la frontera norte. Este artículo es un ensayo sobre el desarrollo económico, social y demográfico de este importante centro urbano nacional y fronterizo durante el presente siglo. Su intención es doble. Por un lado, comprender el cambio demográfico general de Tijuana a la luz de un contexto de desarrollo socioeconómico singular en la vida nacional, y en donde se destacan su estrecha dependencia con Estados Unidos, y la prolífera creación de programas federales encaminados a integrar la economía fronteriza con la nacional. Por otro lado, introducir al lector no especializado en la problemática de la región fronteriza México-Estados Unidos.
