| description | Chile's early process of economic restructuring and trade liberalization allows us to analyze the effects that these processes have had on the labor force and migration patterns during a fifteen year period. One specific sector of the labor force -women migrant workers in Santiago- is particularly interesting to analyze given the disadvantageous conditions of the labor market prevalent during the 1960's.The first years of economic restructuring, which began in Chile during 1975, and the crisis initiated in 1982, provoked a severe increase in poverty and intensified social inequalities. During the last years of economic restructuring -from 1984 on- Chile underwent a period of economic growth and a decrease in unemployment, without, however, experiencing a significant change in the existing levels of poverty. As a result, social inequalities became even stronger. Proof of these disparities is found in the condition of women in the labor force, and is further intensified in the case of migrant women. Among the impacts brought about by economic restructuring most affecting the women who migrated to Santiago we may highlight: the dramatic transformation in domestic service, the increase in the number of non-migrant, lower class women participating in the economy, and the limited and precarious status of women's employment in the more dynamic sectors of the economy. |

El inicio temprano del proceso de reconversión productiva y apertura económica hacia el exterior en Chile permite analizar sus efectos en el mercado de trabajo y en la migración en un periodo de quince años. Un segmento específico de ese mercado de trabajo –las mujeres inmigrantes a Santiago– aparece particularmente interesante de analizar por las condiciones desventajosas de inserción ocupacional que presentaba durante los años sesenta. Los primeros años de la transformación productiva iniciada en Chile en 1975 y la crisis iniciada en 1982 desencadenaron un crecimiento considerable de la población en condiciones de pobreza y en la intensidad de la desigualdad social. En los últimos años del proceso de reconversión económica –de 1984 en adelante– existió una recuperación del crecimiento económico y de los niveles de empleo, sin una disminución consecuente de la pobreza, resultando en una profundización de la polarización social. Una expresión de la desigualdad está constituida por la condición de las mujeres en el mercado de trabajo, que se agudiza en el caso de las mujeres inmigrantes. Entre los impactos de la transformación productiva que afectaron a las mujeres inmigrantes a la ciudad de Santiago, destacan la drástica transformación del servicio doméstico, el aumento en la participación económica de mujeres no migrantes pertenecientes a los sectores populares de la metrópoli y las dimensiones limitadas y precarias registradas en el empleo femenino entre los sectores más dinámicos de la economía.
