| description | This article examines interpretations regarding the relationship between means of support and fertility, taking into account views on social reproduction among peasants, with emphasis on the way they are expressed in terms of indicators. He begins with a brief summary of theories put forth by Malthus, and then examines Neo-Malthusian models which use as an independent variable, the amount of land and as a dependent variable, the number of children. He notes the existence of a positive ratio between these variables, and then demonstrates that in Chayanov's model, the number of children is used as an independent variable, while the idea of a positive ratio with the amount of land is still maintained. He compares these assumptions with those of Palerm, who suggests the existence of an inverse ratio between the amount of land available and fertility; this leads to policy implications contrary to those arising from Neo-Malthusian models. The paper ends with a discussion of assumptions about the rationality, motivations and guiding values the different approaches attribute to economic and demographic behavior among peasants. |

El artículo examina las interpretaciones acerca de las relaciones entre medios de subsistencia y fecundidad, en el contexto de las visiones sobre la reproducción social de los campesinos, enfatizando la manera cómo ellas se expresan en el plano de los indicadores. A partir de un breve resumen de los planteamientos de Malthus, examina los modelos neomalthusianos que toman como variable independiente la cantidad de tierra y el número de hijos como variable dependiente, señalando la existencia de una relación positiva entre ellas. A continuación muestra que en el modelo de Chayanov se plantea como independiente el número de hijos, manteniéndose la idea de una relación positiva con la cantidad de tierra. Luego contrasta estos planteamientos con los de Palerm, quien sugiere la existencia de una relación inversa entre la cantidad de tierra disponible y la fecundidad y que da lugar a implicaciones de políticas opuestas a las que surgen de los modelos neomalthusianos. El trabajo acaba con una discusión de los supuestos acerca de la racionalidad y las motivaciones y pautas de valor que los distintos enfoques atribuyen al comportamiento económico y demográfico de los campesinos.
