Industrialization and urbanization created the conditions for unifying the Brazilian labor market, as well as the transition from an occupational structure based on farm jobs to a broader, more diversified occupational structure, albeit an unequal one in terms of the quality and income of the jobs created. During this process, migrants from the rural area, particularly those from the North-east, showed the highest rates of ascending mobility because of their socio-occupational status of employment in the countryside. Revealing this link between social mobility and migration in Brazil, both in the past and more recently, is the aim of this article. To this end, it begins with a bibliographical essay on social mobility and its relationship with spatial mobility in Brazil over the past fifty years, and the construction of urban, industrial society in the 1990s, including the Lost Decade. It ends with the presentation of certain recent empirical evidence on the advance of social mobility in the country in light of data gathered by the 1996 NADP. |

La movilidad social y movilidad espacial significaron rasgos fundamentales en la construcción de la sociedad urbano-industrial brasileña del siglo XX. La industrialización y urbanización generaron las condiciones para unificar el mercado de trabajo brasileño, así como la transición de una estructura ocupacional asentada en puestos de trabajo agrícolas dirigidos a un espectro ocupacional más amplio y diversificado, si bien desigual en términos de calidad e ingreso de los puestos de trabajo generados. En este proceso, los migrantes de la zona rural, en especial los del nordeste, fueron los que presentaron las cifras de movilidad ascendente más elevadas por su estatus socio-ocupacional de la ocupación ejercida en el campo. Hacer patente esta articulación entre la movilidad social y la migración en Brasil, en el pasado y en el periodo más reciente, constituye, entonces, el objetivo de este trabajo. Para ello, se inicia con un ensayo bibliográfico sobre la movilidad social y su relación con la movilidad espacial en Brasil a lo largo de los últimos cincuenta años, desde el periodo de formación de la sociedad urbano-industrial hasta los años noventa, pasando por la “década perdida”. Se finaliza con la presentación de algunas evidencias empíricas recientes sobre los (des) caminos de la movilidad social en el país a la luz de los datos levantados por la PNAD de 1996.
