| description | “Las mariposas nocturnas” is a short story by Inés Arredondo originally published in 1979 in the collection of stories called Río subterráneo[1]. This article explores, from a semiotic perspective, and using gender as an analytic category, how the identity and the subjectivities construct Lía as a literary character. Our aim is to explore the stylistic resources appropriated by the author to develop a transgressive female character within a socio-cultural context of the early twentieth century. This raises questions such as: How does Lía's identity configuration function? Ontologically, how does the transformation of a female character develop? Which sociocultural model is she responding to?

This article examines the story “The Nocturnal Butterflies”. El cuento “Las mariposas nocturnas” de la escritora mexicana, Inés Arredondo, fue publicado en 1979 en el volumen Río Subterráneo. La finalidad de este artículo es explorar, desde un modelo semiótico y utilizando el género como categoría analítica, cómo se va constituyendo la identidad y las subjetividades del personaje literario Lía; asimismo, buscamos develar los recursos estilísticos de los que se apropia la escritora para construir a este personaje femenino transgresor en un contexto sociocultural de principios del siglo xx. Para ello reflexionamos sobre estos cuestionamientos: ¿Cómo y desde dónde opera la configuración de la identidad de Lía? ¿A partir de qué aspectos ontológicos deviene una transformación del ser humano en el personaje femenino? ¿A qué modelo sociocultural está respondiendo?
