| description | The article analyzes the set of journal publications of the Revista de la Asociación Obstétrica del Uruguay to determine the strategies were used by unionized midwives to resist the subordinate role imposed on them by medicine. It also explores the extent of their commitment to the women's agenda of the mid-20th century. The methodology developed was based on content and press analysis. The findings show that midwives deployed various resistance strategies, including long-range union actions with social class and gender perspectives; as well participating in groups that fought for women’s rights of their time. The study contributes to the women’s press analysis and, in particular, to the recovery of feminist genealogies in Uruguay. Studying this journal provides insight into the process of Uruguayan midwifery in historical perspective and its role in the sociotechnical division of labor and, in the institutionalization of reproductive health.

El artículo analiza el conjunto de publicaciones de la Revista de la Asociación Obstétrica del Uruguay para conocer cuáles fueron las estrategias de las parteras agremiadas para resistirse al lugar de subordinación que la medicina les estaba construyendo. Así como también explorar en qué medida hubo, o no, compromiso por parte de ellas con la agenda de mujeres de mediados del siglo xx. La metodología desarrollada se conformó por análisis de contenido y análisis de prensa de la Revista. Los resultados de la investigación dan cuenta de que las parteras desplegaron diversas estrategias de resistencia, que incluyeron acciones gremiales de largo alcance y con perspectiva de clase social y de género; también formaron parte de los colectivos que lucharon por los derechos de las mujeres de su tiempo. El trabajo aporta al estudio de prensa de mujeres y, en particular, a la recuperación de genealogías feministas en Uruguay. El estudio de esta Revista arroja, además, elementos para comprender el proceso de la partería uruguaya en perspectiva histórica y su ubicación en la división sociotécnica del trabajo, en el proceso de la institucionalización de la salud reproductiva.
