Description
Summary:The text studies the antiquity of yam in the Igbo region of southeastern Nigeria to demonstrate that its domestication is indigenous and dates back thousands of years, even before the Iron Age in Africa. Through oral, ethnographic, linguistic, and archaeological evidence, we challenge the idea that African agriculture originated primarily due to external influences. We also explore some origin myths linking yam to human creation and Igbo identity, as well as taboos and rituals that demonstrate yam’s deep cultural significance and its centrality in their economy and society.
