| Summary: | The study of the Japanese community in Canada is marked by a fragmented history due to the Second World War. The war resulted in the confiscation of property and the forced internment of more than twenty thousand Japanese which nearly wiped out both the ancient community and its historical record. This text focuses on the literature of these immigrants, particularly the journalistic work of Suzuki Etsu for the Tairiku Nippô, one of the few newspapers that were not lost. This study aims to recover this lost history and to understand the complexities of the Japanese Canadian community before and after the First World War. Through the interpretation of Etsu's texts, an attempt will be made to elucidate how his articles "could have been read" by such a specific audience and how this sheds light on the Japanese Canadian community of that period. |
