The ancient societies from the Near East and Egypt used to associate their leaderships positions with the figure of a shepherd. Thus the rulers of these societies used to act as shepherds whose main activities were to lead their people on the right path, as a herd follows its shepherd.
In Egypt, the development of leadership and kingship during the Predynastic period was linked to some features which clearly belong to a pastoral world. Therefore, it is possible to observe the close relationship between the origins of the pharaonic monarchy and all the elements relating to pastoral activities from the study of iconography and the archaeological records. In fact, one of the sacred objects of Egyptian kingship was the so-called heqa-sceptre, which derived from a shepherd’s crook.
Thus, this paper aims to study the pastoral backgrounds which inspired the imagery of the rising Egyptian kingship during the Early Period, stating the hypothesis that in Predynastic Egypt, some of the aspects of the imagery of the pharaonic monarchy were taken from the figure of the shepherd.

Las sociedades de base campesina asentadas en el cercano Oriente antiguo como la egipcia, se han caracterizado a lo largo de su historia por asociar la figura de sus gobernantes o líderes con la de los pastores. Así, los soberanos habrían actuado como pastores de sus pueblos, a los cuales debieron dirigir y guiar de la misma forma en que los pastores conducirían a sus rebaños. En este sentido, en Egipto la aparición del liderazgo o de los jefes locales en época predinástica —que prefigurarán las características de la realeza egipcia— estará impregnada, entre otras cuestiones, por motivos pastoriles. A partir del estudio de la iconografía y del registro arqueológico es posible observar la estrecha relación con elementos referidos a la actividad pastoril en torno de los orígenes de la monarquía faraónica. Sin ir más lejos, uno de los atributos de mando de la realeza egipcia lo constituiría un bastón cayado (el cetro heka), usado por los pastores para controlar al rebaño. Asimismo, de la palabra HqA, que se escribe con dicho signo, derivaría el término egipcio para gobernante; clara referencia a una estrecha vinculación entre la realeza y los atributos del pastor. Un estudio sobre los antecedentes pastoriles que configuraron y marcaron la imagen de la realeza egipcia, y la permearon durante la historia temprana de Egipto. Antecedentes que es hoy posible observar a través de loselementos pastoriles presentes tanto en el origen, como a lo largo del desarrollo histórico de la monarquía egipcia. El artículo sostiene como punto de partida la hipótesis de que en el Egipto predinástico se configuró la imagen de la monarquía faraónica a partir de la figura del pastor, que se asociaba con un líder que conducía a su rebaño.
