El efecto y la importancia del budismo en la literatura de la dinastía Tang eclipsaron las otras tendencias filosófico-religiosas genuinamente chinas, como la del taoísmo o el confucianismo. Wang Wei, uno de los poetas más representativos de la época, es un buen ejemplo de sincretismo y equilibrada convivencia entre religiones, tanto en su vida como en su obra. El análisis de dos poemas de Wang Wei, de inspiración fundamentalmente taoísta, demuestra cómo el discurso y el espacio paisajístico del taoísmo estaban —literaria, estética y espiritualmente— perfectamente configurados, y ofrece, por ello, las claves que los caracterizan.
