| Resumo: | In 1994, the European Commission issued a political communiqué called New Asia Strategy (NAS), through which the principles to construct a Eurasian symmetrical relation would be traced. The institutional result of this process was the creation of the interregional group called the Asia-Europe Meeting in 1996. This article considers that the New Asia Strategy is a European directive that has oriented the European Union-China bilateral relations so far. A basic element in the contemporary Sino-European relation has been to maintain the political will to develop a symmetric partnership, despite the great amount of existing asymmetries. This article studies the political means by which both actors have developed an strategic partnership so that the symmetrical condition prevails. They have carried this out by means of a shared diplomatic discourse that selectively deals with structural asymmetries. |
