| description | The purpose of this paper is to analyze the manner in which simple definiteness is expressed in San Miguel Canoa Nahuatl. It is concluded that in= is the definite article in the Nahuatl of this community based on a direct elicitation methodology. To carry out this task, the Questionnaire to identify 'simple' definite reference noun phrases (Vázquez-Rojas et al. 2017) is used, which allows to elicit both positive and negative evidence of the phenomenon. The data shows that phrases with the clitic in= refer to the totality of entities that match the description of the noun phrase, which must be located within one of the pragmatic sets or uses proposed by Hawkins (1978, 1991): anaphoric use, associative anaphoric use, immediate situation use, and larger situation use. In addition, the generic reference and the Representation of Previous Particular States are addressed (García Fajardo 1994), as part of the tests to elicit such an expression.

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la forma en la que se expresa la definitud simple en el náhuatl de San miguel Canoa. Se concluye que in= es el artículo definido en el náhuatl de esta comunidad con base en una metodología de elicitación directa. Para ello, se utiliza el Cuestionario para identificar frases nominales de referencia definida ‘simple’ (Vázquez-Rojas et al. 2017) que permite elicitar tanto evidencia positiva como evidencia negativa del fenómeno. Los datos muestran que las frases con el clítico in= hacen referencia a la totalidad de entidades que concuerdan con el contenido descriptivo de la frase nominal, las cuales se deben ubicar dentro de alguno de los conjuntos pragmáticos o usos que propone Hawkins (1978, 1991): anáfora directa, anáfora asociativa, situación inmediata y situación no inmediata. Además, se aborda la referencia genérica y la Representación de Estados Particulares Previos (García Fajardo 1994), como parte de las pruebas para elicitar una expresión de este tipo.
