| description | This paper examines the alternation of the pronouns quien/el que in relative clauses without a human-referring antecedent in the 18th and 19th centuries. Based on a corpus of ‘language of immediacy’ (mainly private letters, but also diaries and memoirs), and using a variationist methodology, the study analyzes the linguistic and sociolinguistic factors that favor the survival of the constructions with quien as against the dominant use of el que. The research shows that, in the face of the advance of the clauses headed by el que, there are contexts in which the variant quien is very firm, which explains its gradual recovery from the second half of the 19th century. |

El artículo trata la alternancia de los pronombres quien/el que en las cláusulas de relativo sin antecedente de referencia humana en los siglos XVIII y XIX. A partir de un corpus integrado por textos cercanos al polo de inmediatez comunicativa (sobre todo pertenecientes al género epistolar, aunque también a diarios y memorias), y desde una metodología variacionista, se analizan los factores (lingüísticos y sociolectales) que favorecen la pervivencia de las construcciones con quien frente al uso dominante de las formas con artículo. La investigación demuestra que, frente al avance de las cláusulas encabezadas por el que, existen contextos en los que la variante quien se muestra muy firme, lo que explica su paulatina recuperación a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX.
