| description | Although Yucatec Maya has a long history of written use compared to most indigenous languages, the widespread use of writing in day to day life and the development of an explicit standard writing system remain in their early stages. One important recent step in this process is the publication of a book –U nu’ukbesajil u ts’íibta’al maayat’aan / Normas de escritura para la lengua maya– presenting for the first time a comprehensive set of norms for writing in the language as well as motivating them, often by appeal to aspect of the language’s grammatical properties. This paper examines the relationship between grammar and standardization through a detailed case study of one particular norm: that the question mark not be used. While there may well be other countervailing factors besides grammar that justify the norm (e.g. tradition, a desire to create norms that differ from those of Spanish), we argue against the grammatical rationale for this norm through a detailed survey of interrogative and related constructions, showing that complex interactions between these various constructions validate the functional utility of the question mark for readers. |

Aunque el maya yucateco tiene una historia larga de uso escrito en comparación con las demás lenguas indígenas de las Américas, el uso cotidiano de la escritura y el desarrollo de un sistema de escritura estándar explícito siguen estando en sus primeras etapas. Un reciente paso importante en este proceso es la publicación de un libro –U nu’ukbesajil u ts’íibta’al maayat’aan / Normas de escritura para la lengua maya– que presenta por primera vez un conjunto completo de normas para escribir en la lengua. Además de esto, las normas muchas veces son motivadas por las propiedades gramaticales de la lengua. Este artículo examina la relación entre gramática y estandarización en un caso de estudio detallado sobre el no uso del signo de interrogación. Aunque no rechazamos la posibilidad de que haya otros factores que favorezcan esta norma (por ejemplo, la tradición, el deseo de crear normas distintas de las que tiene el español), argumentamos en contra del fundamento gramatical que dan los autores para el estándar. Repasamos la morfosintaxis de las construcciones interrogativas y categorías relacionadas e intentamos mostrar que las interacciones complejas entre estas construcciones validan la utilidad funcional del signo de interrogación para los lectores del maya yucateco.
