| Résumé: | Indonesia has been the Southeast Asian country hit hardest by the current Covid- 19 pandemic, recording the region’s highest number of deaths. The pandemic caused Indonesia’s economy to collapse for the first time since the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Many people lost their jobs and relatives throughout the Indonesian archipelago, and a solution to this situation is not yet in sight. Under these circumstances, the pandemic has made it difficult for Joko Widodo—Indonesia’s current president—to carry out his reformist program in a society afflicted by endemic corruption, Western New Guinea’s separatist issues, and the rise of religious intolerance. As a result, Joko Widodo faces a complicated scenario in his second term that might undermine his reformist pledges.
